So how and when do you use the auto focus, Dave?

I'm presently using an old Canon 50D. It has some tools to adjust the AF. I need to work with the tools(the screen sensors and frame area indicators) to get the most out of AF. I know when AF will ruin a shot. AF is evolving on newer cameras. Like film, I try to prefocus as a reflex before taking shots.
It is frustrating to see a good shot turn bad(just out of focus) as you move in on the screen,...
I took several shots of this scene varying on the focus area and got one I liked. No AF will help here.
