I replace the batteries every year, futz with them, then put them away. They would be great to spy on people ashore or on other boats. They are quick, work well -- but the batteries don't work that long.
Having said that, if you used them in a seaway, there is a lot of vertigo because of the image stabilization. They are too powerful and narrow beamed to really scan to look for things. (A 14x scope works well as a sniper rifle attachment for doing things that a sniper would like to do. But for general "viewing" of moving items at a variety of distances, they're too powerful and narrow beamed.)
Occasionally, guests and crew futz with them, say ooooohhh as the use my Fujicon image stabilized units... then they always just use the 7x50 Steiners. After about 6 or 8 hours, I pack-up the Fuji's in their waterproof case and put them back out of both the general and harm's way.
I think that the 7x50's are MUCH more useful. I've tried 10x binoc and they just are i) generally to narrow beamed and ii) too heavy to be very useful. If you were on a big stable ship with something to brace the binoculars while you used them, they're more useful.
Get a good pair of 7x50's vs. the image stabilizers. If you didn't get the image stabilizers, they you have little chance with finding something suitable on a boat that's much more magnification.
