I agree 7x50's are more useful for general purpose

If only getting one -- that's what to get for general marine use. Even better with compass -- having a bearing reading is great when tracking "relative bearing" to decide if collision is a risk, particularly with large traffic. (If relative bearing doesn't change over time you're on a converging course.)

OTOH, having AIS displayed on the CP or PC makes that function obsolete, for most ship avoidance situations.
