All flush. The lid/cover is recessed for 3/4" thick decking, laid inside the pan.

() That brings it flush with the cockpit sole decking. Here's a shot of the lid in the old cockpit. You also have to line up the strips with the sole. You can hardly feel it under your feet. The bronze manhole cover, without the wood, weighs 22 pounds. I just weighed it.
