Sounds like you are describing the latest rage for foodies, heirloom tomatoes. I forget now how they get that designation but the ones I have seen look nothing like a traditional red tomato. Tasty yes, photogenic, no.
We did the same with the little cherry tomatoes, grew like weeds. Now we have an enormous garlic patch by the BBQ where we spilled marinade a few years back. You can pick the cutest little garlic cloves this time of year.
