I think it is the nature of sailing, as a job.

Like a delivery crew, his experience has told him for moving the schooner a long distance (to his business destination), sailing isn't as effective as powering to satisfy a reasonable schedule. On the other hand, as a day charterer, he's got it down: Head out into the Bay and sail. He's not concerned about miles covered, just time spent sailing for his guests to "live the dream" for 2 hours. It's brilliant - happy guests, higher profits with lowered fuel costs.

Your second point makes sense to me, and brings back a memory. When I bought my boat almost 20 years ago, it had been moved by a delivery captain and crew from Hingham Mass. to Rockland Maine(straight line=120 NM's). That's a 'down wind' run(so they say,...).

When I took possession of the boat, there were 4 brand new 5 gallon jerry cans, full of diesel in the cockpit lockers. Fair enough; they were on a mission.

But the boats diesel tank holds 80 gallons + 20 = 100 gallons x 6 NM per gallon,... Maybe they thought Rockland was in Newfoundland?
