I was just chatting with a fellow sailor at work who sails a Tanzer 22. There are several of them around here but their numbers are dwindling. Someone at his club was trying to sell a Tanzer 22 but had no offers so he tried to give it away. Still no takers so he sold off the gear he could, sails, outboard then put a sign on it for people to take what they wanted. He ended up giving it to a waste company for scrap. This was a boat that was raced up until this year so presumably still in good enough condition to sail. Scrapping it was cheaper than storing it.
