I bought a new mainsail for the old girl last month, (woohoo!!) and the sailmaker handled the reef points slightly different on the new sail at the tack end. None of this is rocket science, just looking for opinions.
The old sail had a two line reefing system. One line starts at the end of the boom, up through a grommet in the sail back down to a turning block at the end of the boom and up to the mast. The second line started at the mast, up through a grommet in the luff end and back down. Pretty conventional I think and I like the fact I can yank in both lines at the same time and bring the sail down somewhat orderly.
The new sail has the same setup at the end of the boom, but the luff grommets now has a webbing through them with a D-Ring on both sides. To use these I guess I need to install some horns on the gooseneck?
Are there advantages to using the horns? It would seem they provide a stronger attach point, though I've never had problems with just a rope.
A picture I had sent the sailmaker on the gooseneck..
Thanks Rob.
