My friend's boat is a mid 70s 44' beauty with teak decks that need replacing (or removal) in the next year or so. It is a big $ number. As he is 60+, the discussions center around the cost of the deck job which he can justify to himself if he keeps the boat for another decade or so. But making that kind of ownership commitment requires having confidence that he can sail the boat, assuming normal health, until he is in his early 70s. He also wants to be able to single hand it, as he does now from time to time, until then as well. So the question of the in boom furling came up. He already has electric primaries, which change beating completely, and an electric windless, so the issue of the main is the last one to think about. I guess that his other option it to sell the boat and get something smaller. Sooner or later we will all face this.
