I have a painted carbon-fiber mast and am covering the boat mast-up for the winter. I'll be using a blue poly tarp, and plan to slit and tape it at the mast. I have heard of paint bubbling or peeling when moisture is trapped against it, and want to avoid that where the cover wraps the mast.

If I wrap the mast in a rag or carpet scrap and tape the tarp on top of that -- will it be likely to cause a problem?
