I cover the ends of framework, winches, screwheads etc. It's so easy to put on and so cheap there is no reason to scrimp. You are right about the variations- there are endless possibilities. The key IMHO is to find the balance between effort,dollars and performance that suits you. I have used a tall frame like Tom Young desribed in GOB and it worked great except for the time and effort to install and uninstall it. The last couple years I've had a low simple frame and silver tarps to keep the wx out and cover the cabintop and most of the deck. I just painted my hull so don't want the tarp draped around it to chafe. Most folks up here tie under the boat. The heavy weights have the potential to swing around in a big blow and do damage. I saw someone use cinder blocks once and that was not good...I have too many other things on my list to spend big bucks on a custom frame and cover but am deeply envious of those that did!
