Wrap it with electrical tape where you want to protect it. Easy enough to peel out and very durable.

Don't know. I assume it's some flavor of 2-part sprayed-on finish. (nm)
I'm not sure about the paint lifting
David - Where/how else do you use that sill gasket?
I use it anywhere there might be chafe.
