Unless you're Christopher Columbus

one of the costs of boat ownership and cruising is obtaining charts and guides. While you may never plan to make any other stops along the way, the unexpected happens. I suppose you could just sail close to land and VHF range and ask for help but that's not my style. I've been coming to the conclusion that charts are the priority and plotters are the backup. Yup, it costs. Yup, I much prefer the ease and simplicity of just following the little black icon on the plotter. But I have had now, two significant issues with disparities between them that have pushed me back to paper. It saved my bacon and my cruise plans. At lease ensure that you have full coastal paper charts available for making a landfall. A guide or Coast Pilot for basic info. You don't need to know how much ACME Marine charges for fuel but you sure want to be able to get into a safe anchorage near civilization if you need it.
