There is no reason that compatibility with the older models couldn't have been a design criteria for the newer models. Raymarine is notorious for blowing out any reasonable compatibility with each new release. I can only imagine their marketing guys figure it is the way to better profits. Furono has done the same in Navnet 1,2, and 3. But in their case the longevity of each model is much longer than the churn that Ray creates.
