We swapped out a 60 lb CQR and swapped it out 3 years ago for an 88lb Delta. We've had good results with it. In 45 knots of wind it dragged a bit,,, only about 10 feet over 12 hours, I can deal with that.
W pulled into an anchorage, dropped Delta and snugged it down by backing off ( easy throttle for 2 minutes ). It felt good so we shut the engine off and settled down. About an hour later the Admiral put her mask on and jumped in the water to get some exercise and enjoy the water. She swam up to the Delta which was in about 15 feet of water. In looking down she noticed that the anchor was lying on it's back with the tip up and the ears dug in.
HUH????
She told me about it and in an effort to see what it would do I started the engine and backed it down with a more aggressive throttle, we started dragging. We dragged about 20 feet before I turned the engine off. I dove in, swam down to the anchor, turned it over and stuck the point in. That anchor would never have rolled over. Makes me want to put a roll bar on it. I think it happens when the boat is still moving forward when the anchor hits the bottom. If I put it in reverse and start moving the tip points correctly aft. If I'm going forward the tip is pointing forward also. Makes sense as it's kind of a wing.
The incident just bothered me. I've never heard of a Delta doing that and I don't like it at all in my anchor. It should always have the ability to turn over. This one wouldn't.
Great anchor till that happened.
