People weren't a big factor until quite recently

The huge growth in population has placed massive stresses on the marine ecosystem due to the introduction of human wastes (I include industrial and other non-biological waste in that term) and depletion of large parts of the marine organism population (overfishing). I do agree with DDW's comment that population growth is a HUGE problem.
