I tied off to the masthead and pinned the shackle. Stranger things have happened, like this one time...

... I was often asked by my boss to work with an owner of a boat (usually because the owner wanted to save money by not paying for another rigger to be there or we didn’t have enough riggers). Well, going up to do the work was no problem but coming down was a riot. While I was at the mast head, I found out later that the owner of the boat had his wife wrap the halyard tail around her a few times as he was letting me down. That's when things got interesting. He wasn't paying attention and allowed the halyard to unwrap from the winch, his wife took the load of me falling and as fast as I was coming down, she was going up spinning as the line spun her like a top. He grabbed the halyard tail to try and stop us and did but my weight had cinched the line around her extremely tight. I took my weight off by clinging to the mast and she uncoiled down the line spinning until she hit the deck.

Not cool.
