white has much less UV resistance. Somewhere in between would be (is) my choice.

PS. Northern latitudes need less UV protection than southern.
Red is the worst for deterioration
That's exactly right, ask any sailmaker ...
What about tanbark sails... I have heard they last longer
Could be the cover, and could be 'insignia cloth'

A loosely furled sail and a good blow can produce that result...
Furling jibs ALWAYS start to unravel above the clew...
Jon is correct ... Which is why when we furl our big headsail ...
How about simply running a spare halyard around the furled sail?
