...and he had previously visited Cuba and Mexico, 2 countries where entering with a weapon aboard could be very problematic... One report has mentioned that he "resisted", but no mention of a gun...

Appears there may be a bit more to this story than we know so far - nothing unusual in that, of course... But check out this clip from the CBC, at about 50 seconds in, there are a couple of stills from La Prensa which shows the boat driven onto the beach or reef, and half-submerged. I've previously heard no mention of that before, I'd heard mention that they had sought refuge from bad weather in this bay, but no mention of a grounding or a wreck...
