There were indications that the Western Caribbean was loosing it's isolation and charm when we arrived late 2008. We couldn't help but notice that there were changes when we went back to Kuna Yala in 2009 as there seemed to be a lot more European boats. The anchorages generally had 30 or 40 percent more boats in them and the general feel of the place had changed. This was in jut one year.
Seems that our entire cruising experience has been one of being on the edge of an era. An era when cruising the Caribbean was an adventure in self accountability and off the beaten track sailing. Not so much in the Eastern Caribbean, that went away about 15 years ago, still, it was exciting and enjoyable. The Western Caribbean was the place to go to get away from the crowd.
Glad we had the opportunity to cruise when we did. 2000 to present.
We have one more season to explore before it's over. January-June. Back to the Bay Islands of Honduras, onto Belize, Mexico and finally Florida.
It's been fun but it's going away fast.
