Not only do you need the bulkhead space, it's nice if you can mount the heater low.

You can move the air some with fans but heaters radiate too. The lower the better to evenly warm the cabin.

Not too many production boats have that low bulkhead space. Our solid wood heater on our boat was designed into the cabin low enough to radiate and warm the low areas. It takes a lot of space to do that.
