Especially when traveling more or less on a N-S or S-N course the waves will usually be slightly steeper onto the side of the bow/side that is facing 'westward'.
The same reason that the wave fronts will never be exactly perpendicular to the wind direction but always at a 'slight' angle from the pendicular.
