Reading the thread on single line reefing, it seems that several people have 3 reef points. I have two and I find that to be sufficient; I don't find too much of a gap in size between the 1st and 2nd. I use the first reef fairly often but rarely use the 2nd (maybe once a year). I have hank on headsails and I have a good 115% jib that I like to switch to before reefing. I'm sure the size of your main and the type of rig will have as much impact on the decision as where you sail. I'm curious how many reef points the average cruising boat has and how often you use each one.
