But at 22' and engineless sailing the lower Columbia it was necessary to have a lot of sail options. Winds typically 15 to 20 and often enough to 30. Occasionally there'd be a blast out of Young's Bay in particular of 50 mph winds that didn't last long enough to build seas but typically around 20 to 30 minutes. Being a large area and channels to navigate, if you're out there...you're out there and gotta make the best of it.
I installed the baby stay and staysail just for those winds and on more than once occasion sailed through the 50 under staysail only. In the pic I'm behind Tongue Point in protected waters but the wind as measured on the 36'er that took this pic was 35 mph. Turned out the double reef and staysail was very versatile.
