I went with three reef points because I've got no way to add a storm trisail track. In a serious blow, you aren't going to point above 90 degrees to the wind without some sail aft of the mast. Used the 2nd reef point a lot in SF Bay's blustery, variable winds. Offshore, mainly the 1st reef point to balance the helm. Have actually used the 3rd reef point but not in high winds. Used it often powering to steady the boat and once to heave to when I needed to take a break.
