The color is only a marker.

In Oregon the marine and other off-road diesel) is not taxed as high. For every place we have purchased fuel the marine/off-road is red. It's a dye so Mr. Excavator Company Man can't burn his dozer diesel in his F-350 with monster tires. We bought a boat several years ago from a rather pompous guy in Longview Washington that had a pump in his back yard. His furnace was natural gas but he drove a diesel Mercedes. He would have #2 Heating Oil delivered. I happened to ask about the pump when we came by to pick up the cushions and he was only to happy to brag about how much is saved him in fuel. I think he must have bragged it around a bit too much because a few months later there was an article in the paper about him getting busted. As I recall the fine was a couple of thousand dollars. I wasn't me that dropped the dime on him but I certainly did enjoy the article!
