I don't see these as giving too much protection from spray but some privacy. We had a set on our last boat and they did help in that regard in crowded anchorages.

If you had a dodger and could clip a section to the cabin sides, that would block some spray. These must have been as much for boat ID in racing back when these boats were the norm.
