Yeah, havign a dynamometer would be interesting

I would like to have one, but not enough to spend the money.

Please tell me more about the electronic dynamometers. We normally lock the chain in place with a simple SS chain hook. Would it be easy to put one in the loop? How long are they? Can you post a URL?

I have read so many anchor tests that defy logic that I would like to measure real-world loads as we sheer around with waves in a good blow.

When I see tests claiming that some of the new generation anchors develop 3 or more times the resistnace as the CQR, despite presenting approximately the same surface area to the sand/mud/gravel , I am skeptical. I know from diving on our CQRs that they dig deep, if the bottom is not rock, and cannot see why the Rocan, Manson etc can dig any deeper.

I have yet to see any rational explanation of why approximately similarly shaped anchors can have significantly different performance. (to the mud, a CQR, Rocan, Manso etc are similar. All present a sloping steel plate) Notice that the little publicised, and relatively cheap, Kobra does VERY well, yet is very close to the design of the Delta. CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN RATIONALLY WHY ONE ANCHOR MAY BITE SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANOTHER?????

The promoters each argue that they have found the magic angles etc. However, given the variabilty of bottoms, I cannot believe that there is a magic angle for a range of real life condiitons. One angle may be great in a particular sand or clay, but it cannot be optimal for all.

Of course, having easily and comfortably survived a Category 4 hurricane in the Caribbean on a 60 lb CQR on our former 40 ft, 13 ton boat, where the eye went over us, reversing the wind, I have a lot of confidence in the good ol' boy. We also sat through a 50-60 knot blow in Lamlash loch in Scotland OK, while most of our neighbours on moorings and anchors dragged into deep water. All fetched up on the other side and one was recovered out to sea by the RNLI lieboat

BTW I do not sell any marine gear, and my only intrest in supporting the good old CQR is that I am too cheap to ditch my two 75 pounders unless I have convincing evidence that will produce a real improvement.

Comments most welcome
