Back-ups for the Garmin 440 chartplotter include:

* a MLR fixed GPS
* a Magellan handheld
* a Garmin handheld

(I'm not finished yet. Keep reading)

I bought the 440 (my first chartplotter) after going aground a couple of times in the ICW in GA.
The others above came with the boat.

But, I already had TWO Garmin 12 handhelds from my previous boat.

Then - although I already had 5 back-ups - I bought a Garmin 640.

I did this because I wanted a back-up chartplotter. It has the advantage of being able to run on an
internal battery, is transportable, and waterproof. It can also use the same SD card for the Canadian
Maritimes that will fit the 440 'fixed' plotter. I can also use it in the dinghy. Unless it is pressed
into duty, it normally stays in the ditch bag.

So, now there are 6 back-ups. But, I figured that since I already had a Netbook, for a small
cost (buying a hockey puck-like USB antenna) I could press that into service as a chartplotter.
It's not waterproof (like the 640) but it has a bigger screen and has back-up e-charts for
the Canadian Maritimes.

So, that makes 7 backups. Actually, I 'only' have 6 aboard since I don't bother carrying one of
the Garmin 12s. Do you think I'm covered?
