The first thing that struck me was that the pages were slow to load. That is because of the many pictures with excessively large file sizes for their pixel size. Reducing the pictures to smaller file sizes would greatly speed page loading and reduce excessve band width without impacting the quality of the pictures.
After that I looked at a couple of pages on the Maine Harbors page. I looked at the listing for Bass Harbor since I live there and the listing for Southwest Harbor because I keep my boats there. I was going to look at other MDI harbors, but the US Harbors web page crashed Internet Explorer after I looked at the page for Bass Harbor, so I gave up. Again, the loading of the Maine Harbors page was slowed greatly by the large number of excessively large picture files. On top of that the Maine home page SHOULD include a list of all the harbors rather than about 1/3 of them. The current layout forces the viewer to page through several pages to get to harbors with names near the end of the alphabet. A drop down list would eliminate that difficulty. Comments about specific harbors follow.
Bass Harbor - The list of marine services included a number of services that are not in Bass Harbor. Bowden Marine, for example is on the North side of Mount Desert Island a good 30-40 minutes drive from Bass Harbor - if you know where it is. Similarly, Great Harbor Marina is not in Bass Harbor. It is in Southwest Harbor. Listing it under Bass harbor is very misleading. On top of that the distances given to marine services are given as straight line distances. That is fine if you anchor your mega yacht in the outer harbor and use your helicopter to get to those places, but the rest of us are going to travel either by boat or by car. The distances really should be given as both road statute miles and nautical miles by boat. For example, the distance to Dysarts Great Harbor Marina is given as 2.87 miles. By car the distance is 4 statute miles. By water the trip is 7.8 nautical miles. Basically the distances given now are completely worthless and represent lazy content generation.
Southwest Harbor - Ther was more information for this harbor than for Bass Harbor. Unfortunately much of the information was misleading or just plain wrong. I was surprised to find that all vessels should avoid the approach from the east between Sutton Island and the Cranberry Islands in hazy weather. That comment is just plain stupid. The passage south of Sutton is no different than any other approach in any weather. The approach via the Western Way isnn't even mentioned despite the fact that 90% of visiting boaters will approach the harbor that way. Second Southwest Harbor is well protected unless the wind is easterly (70-110 degrees). The outer harbor is more exposed to the SE and also exposed to the north due to the 5 mile fetch up Somes Sound, but the inner harbor provides great protection from 110 degrees to 70 degrees. Third, there is no anchoring allowed in Southwest Harbor without the permission of the harbormaster. He will generally let boats anchor here and there, but it is difficult to find a good spot because of all the moorings. Schooners do anchor just off the coast guard dock. but the awater is quite deep there (40' or so). The harbormaster listed is the Northeast Harbor Harbormaster, which is completely wrong. The general write up is seriously out of date. The marinas and boat yards listed include Morris Yachts which is in Northeast and Bass Harbors, but no longer has a presence in Southwest Harbor. The nautical theme store store listed is also in Northeast Harbor. The listing of marinas and boat yards doesn't include Hinckley, which is listed on the Bass Harbor page. The listing also doesn't even mention the two town docks on the north side of the harbor although the town dock on the south side is listed, but no mention is made of the fact that the harbormaster's office is at that dock.
I could go on, but I think I made my point
