Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

I took a look at a few Washington State Locations

For example, Neah Bay comes up with the weather conditions and access to a chart of the harbor with a satellite overlay. That's a good start, but there's really no other information that I found.

This website will have to compete with the Waggoner Cruising Guide which is updated yearly. It covers most of the area from Puget Sound north as far as the Inside Passage North. It describes itself as the "Bible" of Northwest Cruising. At $21.95, it is a cheap addition to our boat's bookshelf, though we may update every couple years. No internet access needed. Robert Hale, the publisher, is retiring from doing the hard work of this publication, so we'll have to see where it goes. Robert Hale is well-respected and liked in the Seattle area and really had a passion for getting the information right.

It will be interesting to see how the transition to web-based information happens for cruising information. As Larry says, content is critical. How you make money at supplying content is the challenge of the day. It's a tall order to present information reliably for the entire country.

The Lonely Planet printed guides have been a great resource for travelers for years. They seem to be stumbling in the transition to iPhone apps at least. Not easy.

Tom - I know that information you provide will be top-notch. You're a good writer and have a keen eye for what makes a good place to visit, especially things of interest that are not just superficial.
