There is some supporting data that todays bigger boats hauling more traps simply increase the amount of cost to the lobstermen. This Monhegan report is far from conclusive for the whole coast, but your observation reminded me of it.
Monhegan has a separate zone so it is well protected, still the data is compelling.
Half the traps, half the fuel, less boat, half the hours, same catch? (for sailors, half the buoys) Hmmm....
