We were in the Rio Dulce for the 2009 hurricane season. In Guatemala your phone and broadband are on different carriers. We had one carrier for our GSM Iphone 3gs and a USB modem by 'TIGO'. Not bad though as you can purchase the Tigo modem for $35.00 anywhere and it comes with a months unlimited broadband. After that you just add more months at $35.00 a month. They say it's unlimited but I've heard that after 10 or 15 gigs. it slows down but it does keep going. (the Tigo modem is only good for Tigo). The Sony modem my son has can be used with many carriers.
We generally download video in the middle of the night using the wifi from where ever we are. You can download quite a bit from 11PM to 5AM.
One other thing we started to notice. Many wifi systems know when you're downloading video and will shut you off. My Skype wouldn't work and my video was shut off on one wifi carrier in a marina in Stuart. Good thing is that there are some sites that can get you around that by tricking the wifi system. I downloaded a free program that one site has and it all worked after I installed it and routed through their site.
