It's an easy entry. Fairly crowded with moorings but when I was there you could find a spot to anchor just at the edge of the mooring field to the E (the head of the harbor). If you run into lobster fishermen, they are likely to have a Stonington-like attitude towards recreational boaters/cruisers. This is sort of a cross between sarcasm, mockery, disdain, and know-it-allness. Friendly and welcoming not. This attitude was quite different from that exhibited elsewhere by lobster fishermen in Maine - I think it's a sub-culture. The harbor itself is pretty (not remarkably so, but still nice) and - if you don't want to go into the harbor at Stonington - it's probably the best nearby place to provision. There is a real, genuine, good-sized super-market just a short walk away. I think it's actually the main supermarket for Stonington - even though it's closer to Burnt Cove than the main harbor on the Deer Island Thorofare. This is really the only reason why you might want to stop there - and it's the reason I did. You can try to buy fuel from the lobster co-op - and they will probably sell you some - after giving you grief and making fun of you. I wasn't really offended by them but I was humored by them (but, whatever you do, don't laugh at them or respond in kind: just 'take it' and look innocent). Curiously, they reminded me a bit of some New Yorkers! - and maybe that's why I was amused rather than offended.
