If simplicity is the issue, then a sight guage is best

I don't like the idea of opening-up a diesel tank.
MOST of the issues with a electrical/mechanical guage are related to the GROUND failures. I've had three times in twenty years -- all related to doing something to the connections at the top of the tank.
If your unit doesn't work, that's the first place I'd look.
