Some dinks are displacement type, some have a planing hull

That's dependent on the dinghy.
As Rich and others noted -- depends on hull speed.
If you've never owned a hard dinghy, it would be hard to imagine a difference.
I always had hard dinghies and liked them
I like those boats. I toyed with building one of these a few years ago.
