Seems a mute point to me. We don't need nor can we afford the large forces of yesterday.

I like the idea that volunteers are interested and engaged. Hopefully we can pull the best candidates to be most effective learning the new skills required. I think our armed forces will continue to shrink in size as technology and hopefully diplomacy will deal with the costs of war in lives and tax dollars that are inevitable to exist in the future.

I take exception that you need to serve in the military to serve your country. I think we need the bulk of our young people to become engaged in starting businesses, flourishing in our floundering industries, creating jobs all the while getting our economy back on track. The military needs our tax dollars to survive, it's a cost liablity that has to be supported. It has to be efficient to take us into the future.

I feel I've been very effective serving my country by running a small business that has hired countless people directly and indirectly over decades, as well as training young people in various related trades.

I think the military or other volunteer work for our government is great but should never return to a mandatory state. It's just not good business.
