Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

After reading Dashews blog, I'd say WINDHORSE is a cruisers motorboat.

I can't get around the oxymoron of a sailors motorboat(my own term). Ordering your tri without a rig seems like a waste of a sailboat. But as long term long distance cruisers that are getting on(like all of us), the Dashews boat makes sense. In some ways it's very similar to the white boat Justin pointed out.

The sheer fact these are very long boats, makes them able to really eat up the miles off shore comfortably(relative to half the length), regardless of propulsion. Long distance machines that serve as homes as well. If that's what you're doing regularly, and you can afford a really long boat, that makes great sense.

But you're not likely to sail in and out of Pulpit Harbor with the white boat(never with a power boat), or through the countless island thoroughfares and interesting little tickles of water like the "Thread of Life", or meander under sail through countless islands in Merchant Row. Sailing along the coast here is a maze.

WINDHORSE looked like a good base camp though for exploring by dinghy(large sailing perhaps?), or on foot, and Dashews can be on their way to a distant port at a good clip of speed with ease and comfort in most conditions(relative to their former sailboats).

I saw someone working up in the pilothouse when we motored by. He was uploading photos and info right from Pulpit Harbor. Pretty amazing times.
