There's really no distortion in the lens; straight lines remain straight. The perspective creates an distortion of its own, which even if you put your eye up close you likely can't see. When it's on the flat paper (or monitor) you see what's odd; just like you can see differences in light sources. Your eye (brain) accomodates for perspective, color temperature and more.
