I'm not helping at all I know or not even answering your question but your asking it scares me a little.
The deteriorating thing. If your vessel is a Catalina 36 and you're having problems with your shoulder causing difficulty winching the primary's, what happens if the shit hits the fan and you're forced to do even more? If there's any possibility of repairing that shoulder I'd consider doing that first. Our vessel's 40,000 lb and 50 feet. If I had problems manually winching I'd step down to your size vessel. If I had problems with winching on a Cat36 I'd be concerned. We don't have electrics and I feel that the primaries are the only exercise I get.
Of course, that's coming from a history of cruising and passage making. If your plans are for day sailing forget what I just said.
