Winch
In Response To: Upgrading to electric winches ()

Thanks for the responses...what I'm looking for is someone who has installed them. I'm trying to avoid install problems through other's experiences.

As to the first reply, let me explain further. I'm not an invalid by any means. I have a torn rotator on the right that I've been advised by two surgeons to leave alone and severe arthritis in my neck. What this translates to is lots of pain when doing certain things, winching being one. I still snow ski, so I'm not confined to a couch! I'm in my mid 60s, so I figure if I want to continue to sail into my 80s, (that's my plan), upgrading to a convenience item such as an electric winch is money well spent. I bought a "Wincher" this fall in Newport and will use that for the main. I was told not to expect it to handle the primaries with a 135.

My wife is certainly more than capable to handle the Genoa winches, but we have a routine that works well; she helms, I winch/trim. I guess I'm stubborn. We sail on Lake Champlain, so it's the short-tacking out of a 4 mile long bay that will set my "ailments" aflame. Like I said, I have the money for the upgrade kits, so why not?

We have no plans to sail to England or Tonga. Maybe a trip down the ICW to Fla and across to the Bahamas when she retires, otherwise summers on the big lake works well for us.
