Bow thrusters make you a lazy and poorer sailor.
But you should have the engine running if when you haul up the anchor it's so windy the bow is being blown off. Not to have the engine running under those conditions is just plain poor seamanship, irresponsible and is being done for EGO. Needing a bow thruster to push the bow off a dock is the same. If you can't get the bow off the dock by pushing it's irresponsible not to have the engine running (at least in neutral).
Those sailors you know are just plain irresponsible and boats to keep clear of. And that's not IMHO. It's accepted good seamanship .
