Better way to crank with no worries is

to have a drain on the waterlift and leave it open while cranking.
The quantity of water in the bilge is minor, although slightly dirty. Ideally, catch it in a bucket.
This will keep the water pump wet, and avoid filling the waterlift

Our waterlift had a drain plug, but I replaced it with a 1/4" ball valve
