That's what happened to Northern Light a few years back.
I agree on a skeg hung rudder. As I have said before, that can be the roughest passage of all. Even if the winds were light, the rough seas mean a lot of rudder load. Bob Perry wrote an article about rudder design many years ago that gave anecdotal data on poorly designed rudders. Although he said in the article that spade rudders can be built sufficiently strong, IMO two hinge points remove so much strain from the post that the added strength cannot be ignored.
