Cruising Sailors Forum Archive

And dragons. A guy with a new sailboat asked me, "How do I get to Maine?".

Not exactly that way, but he made me aware of how little the majority of boat owners know outside of their general home waters sailing.

He was at the Portland Boat Builders show and has just bought a 40' trimaran(maybe cat). He and his wife want to do some cruising in Maine, so they're exploring the notion. To the average sailboat owner(sails less than 40 miles from home), Maine is unreachable.

You never see a "newb" like this guy above, on the CSBB. We're known as a bunch of old salts here(lol!) and I think that makes this too threatening. I'm a sucker for a newb, I've been teaching them how not to cut off their fingers my whole life! We were all newb sailors at some time.

You guys don't have to worry, the few boats I see that make it up the coast this far are experienced and never cause any problems I see. It's Route 1 that brings the masses.
