We took the boat into Boston two years ago, stayed at one mooring at the Boston Harbor Sailing Club 4 nights and departed in dense fog, so that hardly makes me an expert. Here's what I wrote on ActiveCaptain for my review:(nl)For $50 a night you get a mooring and launch service -- there are no shore facilities other than a dinghy dock, But the location is fantastic, and this is a very well situated stop if you want to be in the heart of downtown Boston. You can step off the launch at the Boston Aquarium or tie up your dinghy at Rowes Warf, and you are in walking distance to Fanuel Hall, the Freedom Trail and all the nightlife/restaurants and tourist attractions.
This is a VERY busy spot and you should expect wakes and noise from water taxis, tour boats, ferries, and other commercial traffic from about 7AM to 11PM. But then, you wouldn't come to downtown Boston for solitude, would you? I would add that if you want to provision, the Golden Goose Market is in short walking distance and they will deliver, 617-367-8134. If you want to go there to pick out your own order they will drive you back in their car, so you don't need to lug heavy bags. Wonderful service. They also have bags of ice, but if you want blocks (not cubes) they will order and have it the same day.
The image below was taken as we departed and I thought the fog was lifting. Soon after, it descended again and we were in the thick of it much of the day as we threaded our way out the channel into Cape Cod Bay. It's a long way in and out of Boston (by sailboat).
From what I can tell reading other posts, guide books and charts -- you could spend several years getting to know the general waters and islands in Boston Harbor. Here are a few more of my images. Not pro quality but you're welcome to use any of them in your article, gratis. I'll send them to you full-size if you want.
