() strong current at times, bridges, shallow spots, boat traffic in narrow waterway, and all for what? There are just too many
possibilities for things going wrong compared to the relatively straight-forward route of going outside. Also, at least you
can sail if conditions permit if going outside; you'll have to power the whole way if taking the canal.
