Freeport can be cheap, fun, and safe...
In Response To: Expensive at West End ... ()

We spent a few weeks in Freeport waiting for a window during the winter from hell. There is the newly renovated old "Running mon" marina - now renamed Sunrise Marina. Once a mecca for wealthy Florida Yachtsmen, it is now back in full operation, and while recently overshadowed by West End and Lacaya, it is a very nice and very protected marina with the only floating docks we encountered over there. There is a pool and beautiful rec room, free wifi, and laundry. They allow unlimited fresh water boat washing too. Their prices are very reasonable, and they are closer to city center than any other marina (within biking distance - which they provide) and extremely helpful and friendly staff. It is a hotel and marina and was re-activating it's fuel dock when we were there. There is a supermarket and small mall within a ten minute walk with an excellent outdoor seafood and bar establishment. Cruisers are discovering it as a low-cost option to the outrageous prices at West End and Lacaya. Our stay there proved to be one of the highlights of our Bahama experience.
