I was tracking a course west in parallel to a tug with barge in tow. His course was a few hundred yards south of mine. His AIS said he was doing 9.5K and we were doing about 10.5 - 11.5. We moved out to about a mile ahead of him when I hove-to and let him pass because I was going to turn to windward to head into New Harbor, and didn't want to risk cutting across his path. I communicated my intentions and he appreciated the communication. It was nice having AIS to be able to hail him by name, and see his speed and course on my netbook. (I'm running Coastal Explorer with the AIS feed overlaid on screen, along with an arrow showing his course and mine and CPA calculations updated in real-time.) No confusion and no bother.
