The only way I've backed into any space is if I can orient that space to be where my boat naturally goes if turning to port(at low speed) and gently reversing. This will spin the boat say 90 to 160 degrees(depending on forward speed) and forward motion will be converted into a short window of controllable, sort of quartering, reverse direction(does that make sense?). I learned it watching daysailers backing in(to go bow out with the new group) with similar underbodies.
At any rate, I wouldn't try that without line handlers all around, as these guys did.
